Born in Huddersfield in 1967, Martin attended Dewsbury and Batley Art College, studying surface pattern and textile design before going to Manchester Polytechnic to study for a degree in embroidery and soft sculpture. He has since specialised chiefly as a theatrical designer and maker, specialising in puppetry. His interests include puppetry, painting and drawing, photography, DIY and the cinema.
